What is Tokelau's claim to the island

Tokelau's claim is based is based on cultural historical information passed down from generation to generation. Olohega was a necessary component as it was ' Whenua whakamua' (communal land). The elders of the land appoint the men to harvest coconuts, to provide for the village. This is an ancient practice which is still used in Tokelau. Oral tradition according to 'Matagi Tokelau'. The year 1711 a group from Tokelau were sent to Olohega to plant crops,as it had rich and fetile soil, to bring as offerings to their God ' Tui Tokelau', Olohega became an overseas plantations where 'food gathering' parties came to cultivate and harvest their plantations. Not only was it 'Whenua whakamua' asset, but also provide the tributary alliance Fakaofo needed to maintain its hegemonic control on the other atolls.
